Do you mean the reboot itself fails or the machine fails to come back up
properly? I have some laptops that are literally unable to reboot, but
I'm not sure you mean this.

Is this as a normal user or as root or both? If you haven't tried it as root
do that. It sounds like a problem with PAM or Shadow Passwords. Which is
odd since it's a fresh install.

The only references to stage 1 and stage 2 that I know of off hand are gcc
errors that can occur when *building* gcc.

The constant problems with default vendor kernels really points to some kind
of hardware conflict. I find it highly suspect that they would fail to boot,
especially from vendors that do extensive testing. Try running memtest86
overnight and see if it kills his box.

Try booting the system into single user mode and poking around. Maybe something
is really horribly borked on the disk, causing it to silently corrupt login
binaries ::-)
