Whoops, wrong. It turns out /dev/midi1 is what I need. But
occasionally, if a program dies without fully releasing the midi
device, I get nothing until I do a full reboot. That's why I thought
none of the midi devices worked.

I've now got pd and csound both working with midi input!
Still no spiralsynth, though. :(
